2026 W-4 Form: What You Need To Know

IRS Form W4

The IRS has released a new 2026 Form W-4

The IRS has released a redesigned 2026 Form W-4.
The redesigned 2026 Form W-4 was finalized in late 2025, and employers should now be using the new form and may require you to update your information.

The layout is different.
The calculations are different.
And yes, it may look confusing at first glance.

This post explains what changed, what you need to do and how we can help.

Why the W-4 Changed

The IRS updated the form to:

  • Improve paycheck withholding accurace
  • Simplify the calculation process
  • Reflect updated tax law and income brackets due to the passing of the One Big Beautiful Act (July 2025)

Your overall tax liability doesn’t change; only the amount withheld from each paycheck throughout the year does.

Do You Need to Fill Out a New W-4?

Your employer may request it, and if they do, you’ll need to complete the new version.

You can also update your W-4 voluntarily if:

  • You had a major life change
  • You want to adjust your refund or balance due
  • You want more or less tax withheld

How We Can Help

In past years, we have assisted some clients in completing their W-4 forms. With the new 2026 redesign, we are updating our process to keep things accurate and fair to everyone.

Here’s what’s changing

We can help you to understand the new form during a scheduled tax planning appointment, but can no longer complete the W-4 form via quick portal messages.

Why this change?

  • The new form requires personal information only you can provide
  • The IRS expects employees to complete their own withholding documents
  • Accurate guidance requires reviewing your full tax picture, not just one line of a form
  • A planning appointment gives us time to do this correctly
If you want assistance reviewing your situation and completing the form confidently, you can book a tax planning session at any time here
